Analysis of Translation of Culture-Loaded Words in Broken Wings from the Perspective of Skopos Theory 

Jia Pingwa’s renowned novel Broken Wings, created in 2016, is rich in profound ethnic cultural heritage and is one of the outstanding works of rural literature in the new era of China. It was translated into English by British translator Han Bin in 2019. Since its publication, the English version of the novel has been widely popular in Western countries and has attracted the attention of researchers. This paper aims to analyze the translation of culture-loaded words in Broken Wings. Guided by the three principles of the Skopos theory, it conducts a qualitative analysis of the five types of culture-loaded words in the novel, namely material culture-loaded words, eco-logical culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words, language culture-loaded words, and religious culture-loaded words, and examines the strategies and principles followed in the translation process. The study finds that the translator flexibly employs translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, and transliteration, with the aim of providing some references for the translation of Jia Pingwa’s works and culture-loaded words.
